Donington BSB: Irwin to race on after broken neck diagnosis

Glenn Irwin has shrugged off a broken neck as he plans to be back in the saddle for tomorrow’s first Bennetts British Superbike Championship race at Donington Park.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider crashed at Goddards in this morning’s first free practice session, and was taken to hospital with a broken neck – which was then discovered to have been from his crash at Knockhill last June.

Back at the track tonight and having been passed fit to ride tomorrow, the Carrickfergus man says that far from being concerned, it’s given him a new confidence.

“I’m feeling good, considering,” he said. “Earlier on I was convinced I had a broken back as I hit the ground hard and was quite badly winded. I got told I had a broken neck but it didn’t feel that stiff.

“I went to hospital and they started pressing around my neck and were like ‘is that not sore because you’ve got a broken neck?’ and I was like ‘I don’t have a broken neck.’

“On X-rays you can clearly see it, but it turns out it’s from Knockhill, and they reckon the ligaments have healed over it.

“It just gives me confidence. I came back from a horrible injury and won, and now I have come back from an even more horrible injury. I still managed to get 13 laps in so I don’t think I missed much. Tomorrow looks to be different conditions so we’ll see.”
