Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne took the MCE British Superbike victory for a second time at Knockhill today, with a win in the final race of the day, and extends his championship lead by 30 points.

The reigning champ led from the start, and managed to get a one second lead over second place finisher Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Brookes in the opening stages. But the Aussie waited till the final lap to make an impact and did manage to close the gap by 0.8 seconds, as the rider tackled the Scottish circuit and flew over the kerb of the chicane in an attempt to overthrow Byrne from the top of the podium, but the Kawasaki was too strong, leaving Brookes with another second rostrum finish.

Samsung Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari out paced team-mate Alex Lowes to clinch that all important final step on the podium, for a second time today, with the Japanese rider taking away some much needed points to get himself closer to Showdown contention. So it is an exact repeat of race one, with Byrne in first, followed by Brookes and Kiyonari making it on to the podium.

Lowes did start the race in second place behind Byrne, but Brookes got the better of the Derby rider at Leslies on lap four, and soon the Honda rider found himself in a battle with team-mate Kiyo. But on lap eighteen Kiyo made his move and pulled away from Lowes, and the Englishman slipped away with Kiyo crossing the line with a seven second advantage.

It must have felt like déjà-vu for Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Chris Walker, as he finished the final race of the day in fifth, the same result as in race one. It was a rather lonely race for the veteran rider, as he was four seconds behind Lowes, and Buildbase BMW’s James Westmoreland had his own battles to contend with for a sixth place finish.

Westmoreland was fending off the challenge from Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Keith Farmer, but a mistake on lap fourteen saw Farmer go wide and into the gravel at the Hairpin, and he rejoined the race in thirteenth. The mistake cleared the way for Westmoreland to take sixth.

But there were other battles out on the Scottish track, most notably for seventh. The diminutive figure of Tyco Suzuki’s PJ Jacobsen had to fend off charges from the equally tall figures of Buildbase BMW’s Jon Kirkham and GBmoto’s Peter Hickman. But the plucky New Yorker was able to stand his ground crossing the finishing line in seventh, followed by Kirkham and Hickman.

MH Kawasaki’s Howie Mainwaring Smart was in a last lap fight for a top ten finish with Rapido Sport’s Matteo Baiocco, but the more experienced Englishman got the better of the Italian on the final turn to clinch tenth place.

There were many rider’s who failed to make it to the end. Bathams Honda rider Tommy Bridewell did not even make it off the grid to complete a warm up lap. The Devizes lad had a technical problem and the bike was moved to the pits but his team were unable to get it started ending Bridewell’s race ambitions before they even started.

It will be a race that the Milwaukee Yamaha team will like to forget, as James Ellison crashed on the opening lap at Leslies, after clipping the back wheel of Walker, and team-mate Josh Waters entered the pits with a technical issue on lap ten.

Ellison was not the only rider to hit the gravel. On the same lap and in the same place Bathams Honda’s Michael Rutter crashed out, and later Padgett’s Jakub Smrz fell at the Hairpin. Seconds later the Czech Republic rider was joined by Doodson Motorsport's Robbin Harms who stopped at the Hairpin with a technical issue. Quattro Plant’s Danny Buchan was missing from the starting line-up after sustaining an arm injury during warm up this morning, meaning he missed both main races today.
