Knockill's Bennetts British Superbike Championship round at the weekend proved to be an up and down affair for Jason O’Halloran with the McAMS Yamaha rider losing the title lead he’d earned after his superb hat-trick at Oulton Park.
The weekend started well with pole position and second place on Saturday – his first ever podium at the venue – but a spill in Sunday’s opening race saw him lose the title lead although sixth in the second race helped salvage his day.
“Second on Saturday felt like a win as I’ve been trying for a very long time to get a podium here so it was a big box ticked,” said the Australian. “The bike was working really well and I’d always go for the win then it’s there but in Saturday’s race, it just wasn’t quite there. I needed the race to be a few laps longer as I started to pull Christian (Iddon) in at the end but didn’t quite have enough to do it.”
That proved to be the highlight of the weekend as he crashed out early in Sunday’s first race as he fought his way through the pack from a third row start. He had the same starting position for the final race of the weekend with sixth place seeing him head to Brands Hatch second now in the standings, six points behind new leader Iddon.
“Trying to come through from ninth was always going to be tough and I was trying to make a break from the guys I was running with. Not necessarily because I didn’t want the leaders getting away, more to give myself a bit of space but I just made a mistake. A bit too much speed and a bit too much front brake pressure and down I went.
"I was on the same position on the grid for the final race and again it was difficult. My pace was as good as the leaders but it's tough to bridge the gap at Knockhill. We had the pace this weekend and I took pole, a second place and a sixth so I' an m happy."
