KNOCKHILL BSB: RIDERS REVIEW

VISK BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
James Ellison - Airwaves Yamaha (Q=6th, R1=5th, R2=3rd)
“My start in Race One wasn't great. The front wheel lifted and I entered the first corner pretty far down the order. I gave myself a bit of work to do but I knew our race pace was good. I could chip away at the guys in front. When Karl Harris crashed in front of me, I had to come to a complete stop. I couldn't believe it. I fought constantly to make the places back up. I passed at nearly every corner of the circuit. I had to. The race was fun and I was pleased to be able to get back up to 5th, but the 1st lap incident was frustrating.”
“Race Two really made up for Race One. I had a few tactics for the start and they paid off. Colin Wright thought I'd actually jumped the start my reactions were that much quicker. It was a tough race. It took me a while to pass Michael Rutter. He made himself very wide! Once I'd passed Stuart Easton I was feeling really comfortable on the Airwaves Yamaha. If only we'd had a few more laps I think I could have made it to 2nd.”
Leon Camier – Airwaves Yamaha (Q=2nd, R1=1st, R2=1st)
“My start in Race One was miles better than any other I've had this season. I wanted to get past Josh Brookes straight away. I then followed Stuart Easton for a little bit, and made a pass as soon as I could. Once I was in the lead, I just got my head down. I managed to go quicker than my qualifying time. When I saw the safety car being deployed I thought ‘that's just what I need'. All my work to build a gap meant nothing. In the laps behind the Safety Car I was thinking through a plan for the re-start. I decided to gas it but wheelied so had to back off, before gassing it again.”
“I got another good start to Race Two, only losing one place. I saw Josh Brookes start to make a break at the front so I passed Stuart Easton the first chance I got. I had a good fight with Josh for the lead. I really enjoyed battling him for a couple of laps. Once in front, it was a case of keeping focused until the flag. It felt awesome to get the first ever win for Airwaves Yamaha at Knockhill. To get a double is something else!”
Chris Walker – Motorpoint Henderson’s Yamaha (Q=7th, R1=7th, R2=5th)
“What a great weekend for the team, we have made mega progress with the bike and we are now running with the boys and can only get better.  Karl swiped me in the first race and made me work hard for 7th I guess I was lucky to survive, he is a bit solid to have running into the side of you!”
“Race 2 was good for us, I lost the tow a bit when I had a moment but I managed to keep the pressure on Rutter who made a mistake and we got a great 5th place.  I feel we made great progress and our race pace has stepped up, we are only half way through the year so plenty of time for us to move up the Championship table.”
Graham Gowland – Motorpoint Henderson’s Yamaha (Q=8th, R1=8th, R2=7th)
“What a great weekend for me and my team, my best qualifying and two awesome races, we have all worked hard to get the bike working like this and we all deserve a weekend like this. For me I feel that I have made great progress and moved to the next level, the whole weekend went without any problems and I feel I have learned so much, my fitness was needed as 30 laps around here was pretty tough but I feel great and ready for Mallory in a couple of weeks.”
Peter Hickman – Ultimate Racing (Q=15th, R1=12th Cup=2nd, R2=14th Cup=3rd)
“I got away fairly well but seemed to struggle in the first few laps. But once I got myself into a rhythm the bike felt good, although I did seem to struggle a bit with rear grip. But all in all the bike has been working well all weekend and 12th is my best result ever at Knockhill.  I was a little bit disappointed with race two to be honest, We made a couple of changes to the bike but it made absolutely no difference whatsoever.”
“Again I struggled a bit with rear grip and after Ian Lowry came across the line with smoke pouring out his bike I backed off as I thought the race would be been red flagged. There was that much oil about that it really wasn’t safe, but the organisers for whatever reason didn’t do that. I am sure if someone had fallen off then it would have been stopped but why wait until that happens. Because I backed off I lost touch with the group I was circulating with and completed the race in a very lonely 14th position.
Tom Tunstall – Hardinge Doodson Motorsport (Q=22nd, R1=13th Cup=3rd, R2=16th Cup=4th)
“I got to a reasonable lap time early in the weekend but we’ve struggled to make much progress from there. I’m working very hard on the bike and we’re still trying to find a set-up that allows me to run the pace I need. Although we’ve changed quite a lot it hasn’t shown in the lap times but we’ll keep pushing and working on it”.
“The changes for race two unfortunately made the bike worse. The rear was coming around both into and out of corners more. It was still worth a shot as it’s important to understand the issues and the only way we can do that is to try different settings. It’s been a very frustrating weekend and it’s important to learn from the issues we’ve had.  But even after a difficult weekend we’ve come away with another podium, a load of points, and a lot more experience so we can’t be too unhappy!”

Dave Johnson – Team Maxxis (Q=14th, R1=DNF, R2=13th)
“I am really happy with the changes to the bike. The additional power and improved torque made it feel like a completely different machine.” When asked about race one he added, “What a dream start, I had a bit of luck when Karl went down at the hairpin, but I was definitely making ground on the pack in front. The lowside on lap 10 was a real disappointment. The crash damaged the front brake lever, so I was unable to continue.”

FUCHS-SILKOLENE BRITISH SUPERSPORT CHAMPIONSIP
Steve Plater – H M Plant Honda (Q=2nd, R1=11th)
“I was really frustrated as I had a front tyre grip problem for some reason. I hadn’t had a problem all weekend but I nearly crashed three times in the race before I finally slid off at the hairpin so I don’t know why. It was ok at mid 50s pace but as soon as I went a little faster it became a big problem. The HM Plant Honda team is checking the bike over now to see if it was a tyre issue or something else. But I did manage to pick up a few points for 11th place which could make all the difference at the end of the year.”
Billy McConnell – MAP Raceways Yamaha (Q=1st, R1=4th)
“That was a tough race. I was just going for the points as there were some people in front of me who don’t have so much to lose. I saw Plater go down so I went for as many points as I could manage. I’m not happy with fourth as I wanted a podium but it is strong points. I’m really looking forward to Mallory now as we have tested there and my MAP Raceways Yamaha went well.”
Lee Johnston – MAP Raceways Yamaha (Q=6th, R1=5th)
“It was a good result but I’m still disappointed as I was lapping faster than the leaders as I was coming through. I got duffed up at the hairpin and was run out wide onto the grass. I got over that and hooked onto Billy’s back wheel when the race was red flagged. I had hoped to go for the podium. I’m not fully fit yet but I was eager to overcome that. Mallory is next and I’ve never been there I hope to squeeze in a test so I’m not going there blind.”
Allan Jon Venter – MAP Raceways Yamaha (Q=13th, R1=9th)
“My MAP Raceways Yamaha felt good and it was a good race. I lost my gap to Chris Martin who I had been following so I ended up riding on my own; it was hard to keep my concentration. I’m happy to be the first South African home and I’ve got to say thanks to my mechanic Jason, to MAP, to Raceways and to K-Tech. I can’t wait to get to Mallory Park as we tested there recently and I was fast.”
Daniel Cooper – Centurion Racing (Q=9th, R1=3rd)
“I'm made up with the consistent results that I've been having recently and hope it will continue for the rest of the year and that I can finish in a good place in the overall Championship standings. We had to do a bit of work on the bike to get it set up right for Knockhill but it was mega by the time race day came. I was stuck in a proper battle and it was good fun to be dicing with them all. The opening laps were a bit frantic but I wanted to ensure that the leaders didn't get away. I'd like to thank all the Centurion team and all my personal sponsors for all their help so far.”
Tom Grant – Centurion Racing (Q=5th, R1=7th)
“I'm a bit disappointed with the result today as I was hoping to be battling up at the front with the leaders. It was a good dice with all the boys but I did run on at the Hairpin and I just wasn't able to catch up the ground. I got a mega start and was keen to push hard to stay up near the front of the pack but I think I pushed a little too hard as my tyres were struggling towards the end of the race. I'm looking forward to getting to Mallory in a couple of weeks time and getting a good result there. Once again thanks goes to the Centurion team for all their hard work.”
Marty Nutt – Nutt Travel.com/T&G (Q=15th, R1=16th)
“I got a good start and was in the middle of a gaggle of riders but was losing out on speed on the start and finish straight. I was finding it very hard to make a pass because of the gap that the guys in front would pull on the straight.”
“To make a pass you need to be on their back wheel but I wasn’t so I never really got the opportunity to move forward in the race and just about managed to hold my place so it was a bit frustrating really. We have had a rubbish year so far this season as we have only been able to get into the points on one occasion so we will have to have a look at where we go next year as this little 600 is not giving us the results we need.”
METZELER NATIONAL SUPERSTOCK 600
Joe Burns – Splitlath Motorsport (Q=2nd, R1=1st, R2=2nd)
“I’m really happy with this weekend, it’s been fantastic!  I came to Knockhill knowing that this was a strong track for me, and I was hoping to better my best finish of third this year.  It was probably the most perfect round for me. To have two strong races and a win and a second is brilliant, and it gives me a real confidence boost.”
“Since I joined the series last year I’ve been looking for that first win, and getting it felt even better than I’d hoped.  At the start of the weekend I was fourth in the championship, and I’ve come home second and just 10 points behind Jamie. At the moment, I’m the most consistent rider in the top three, having scored points in every round this year, so I need to keep myself focused and do what I can to narrow the gap which Jamie has at the front.”
Luke Jones – MAP Raceways Yamaha Junior (Q=6th, R1=4th, R2=DNF)
“In race one on the chicane up the hill I was losing out on time. When I got it right I put in a good time but when it was wrong I lost a lot of time. I hit third gear at the hairpin and lost drive. It was a good race and the lap times were unreal.”
“In race two, I came across a back marker at the hairpin and he was taking a wide line so I decided to cut under him to try not to lose my drive to the line. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a moment which chucked me out of the seat, losing control. It’s been a tough day.”
Nikki Coates – MAP Raceways Yamaha Junior (Q=8th, R1=DNF, R2=DNF)
“I couldn’t stop the bike from locking up and people were able to pass me as I wasn’t stopping. We are looking at the clutch as I think that is where the problem is. Race two, what can I say, just not my weekend. I’ll put it behind me and get ready for the next one.”
Mike McClean – MAP Raceways Yamaha Junior (Q=28th,R1=20th, R2=22nd)
“The race was good but it was carnage. We seemed to do a lot of laps behind the safety car which was a bit mad. I was pleased to get through the race in one piece. After the warm-up, which didn’t go well, I was pleased with how the race went. Race two I didn’t really enjoy it as I was struggling to get into a rhythm and with the bike. I’m glad to finish both races and I’ll be keen to move on to Brands Hatch.”
METZELER NATIONAL SUPERSTOCK 1000
Conor Cummins – Team Blackhorse Yamaha (Q=7th, R1=6th, R2=6th)
"It's been a good weekend for me and the team and everything came together over the course of the three days. All the time and effort we put in at Donington is certainly paying dividends and we've made massive progress with the handling of the bike this weekend, which has allowed me to push that little bit harder. The team have been working so hard to give me what I need and I've got a good feel for what the bike's doing now so we're at a place where I think we can start pushing for podiums."

"I didn't get the best of starts in the first race and it took me a while to get past local rider Bob Grant who was riding well and had all the lines covered. Once I'd got by him the front group had pulled a gap but sixth was a good way to open the day. In the second race, I managed to get a lot better start and moved up to sixth straightaway although I made a couple of small errors and that was just enough for me to lose the tow.”
“My lap times were on a par with the front guys though and we're right in the ball park now so to come away with two sixth places is a good return and just rewards for all the effort Ian and the team have been putting in. I'm really looking forward to the next round at Brands now so I've just got to say a big thank you to Team Blackhorse Yamaha and all my personal sponsors, especially Pokerstars and Solway Slate and Tile, as I wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for them."
Richard Cooper – Team Co-Ordit Yamaha (Q=4th, R1=5th, R2=3rd)
“It’s been one of those weekends, only a few tenths covering the top riders. On the last
lap, Luke ran it a little bit wide, I kept it tight and fired it out of the hairpin. It was a pretty good race and the team worked really hard, so this podium is a massive thanks to them. In between the two races we made a few minor changes; small changes can make a massive difference round this track.”
“Gearing was one of the things we changed to make the bike fire out of the corner better. We lacked the top end but I could pull better from the corners and get the time back that way, which paid dividends in the end. Big thanks to Mark Fisher, my boss for the extra time off this week to come here. Race 2 was the perfect ending to the weekend.”

Bruce Wilson – Sorrymate.com/ Team Co-Ordit (Q=28th, R1=26th)
“After a promising start to Q1, I brought the session to an end with a massive highside
out of the chicane. My back and ankles took the brunt but fortunately X-rays showed nothing was broken. I had to sit out Q2, which pushed me back to 28th on the grid. I tried to ride the bike in warm-up but found it tough going. The team and I took the decision to ride in the first race.”
“After slipping back a little, I started to regain place but towards the latter stages I was struggling with my right ankle, so the sight of the chequered flag was a relief. After a post-race examination of my ankle we decided not to risk further injury
and made the tough decision to sit out race 2. On a positive note, I set my PB in the race and was really enjoying battling with my fellow racers. I’m looking forward to getting back to full fitness with the Mallory Park break, and hope to be ready for Brands Hatch.”
RELENTLESS BRITISH 125GP CHAMPIONSHIP
Brian Clark –  Banks Racing/Express Racewear (Q=14th, R1=6th)
“That wasn’t too bad considering the head start I gave everybody! We have a few things to address on the bike for the next round but I need to get my Qualifying sorted. We should have been front runners this weekend but instead I’ve allowed myself to slip further away from the Championship lead, I won’t let it happen again.”
“Consistency is what’s needed and 6th is not where I need to be! I’m grateful to the team, they all wanted a good result and I’m sorry I haven’t been able to supply this weekend but it was a good race and I look forward to seeing the highlights Thursday night on Eurosport two! Local round Mallory Park is next so I will have to put in a performance that really counts, I want to be Champion so from here on in its got to be perfect every round!”
