Astro Racing Honda’s Sam Lowes excitably continues with his Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship challenge this weekend at Mallory circuit just hours after receiving confirmation of an additional ride in World Supersport for the remainder of the season.
Lowes returned to the BSB paddock this year after racing in the European 600cc Superstock category and is a vital challenger for the Supersport Cup title whilst also scoring points in the main championship. The forever smiling rider finished testing with the World Supersport team Echo CRS Grand Prix on Thursday before flying back in time to arrive at the Leicestershire circuit in the early hours of the morning.
Lowes said: “I’ve only just found out and I am really pleased. The bike is awesome. If I keep getting results and do well out there, knuckle down and who knows what might happen. I didn’t want to stay in Superstock, Supersport is where you need to be.”
“BSB was the best opportunity for me, a good bike, the team is good, it’s friendly and we all get on well, it is really good. I am definitely having my best season racing, I am really enjoying riding and my confidence is growing.”
The hectic schedule has not hindered him in anyway in first practice at the Leicestershire circuit he put set the second fastest time of the session. Even though he slipped down the order to eighth by the end of first qualifying he has taken approximately half a second off his time. Not too disappointing considering that the top eight are all within just over a second of one another.
Apart from one non scoring round Lowes has constantly finished in the top ten which includes four podiums three of which were race wins. Lowes said: “The season is going alright, the first round was good, but then we had a few bad races, a few hard tracks and also with me not really getting on with the tracks.”
“I had a tenth at Knockhill but I could have done better, I had the pace but I had a bad start so I had to make up for that. We struggled at circuits like Snetterton and Thruxton because they are mostly about speed, but the next four circuits from Knockhill onwards, like Mallory should be good.”
Lowes who currently sits second in the Cup Championship can’t get enough of riding and is thoroughly enjoying every moment. The extra challenge of the World championship has only thrilled him even more but in no way has he lost focus or determination in the BSB paddock.
Lowes said: “The goal was to obviously win the cup, my aim is generally for a top ten in the main championship and also in every race. The next few tracks though I think I am being realistic in saying top eight or six. I am really enjoying riding my bike, even more when you are winning as you do and I want to get good results both in BSB and World’s, that’s how you get noticed.”
