MALLORY BSB: SYKES TAKES FIRST POLE FOR RIZLA

The dry session saw Yorkshire rider Tom Sykes took the first pole position for Rizla Suzuki at the sixth round this weekend at Mallory Park with a 0'56.005s.
With the top 16 riders all within a second of one another Sykes sat in the top spot early on in the session before Shane Byrne came to spoil the party, then after suffering bike problems Sykes had to return to the track on his number two bike, even after having to adapt his riding he skillfully took pole.
Sykes said: "The times came easier at the beginning of the session, then there was a problem and I had to use my number two bike. That was bad, I had to make it happen and had to change my style a bit. I would have liked to put a bigger gap in it, but a poles a pole."
Regarding the team's success Rizla Suzuki Team Manager Jack Valentine said: "It's very good, obviously the Suzukis are strong at this track as Tom has just proved and also Michael in second. The bike and team are working really well. It will be a good race tomorrow, I am sure the other guys dont intend to let us get away with it so the crowd is in for a good race."
Michael laverty of Relentless Suzuki gains his first front row start of the season in second after temporarily taking pole with a time of 0'56.109s six minutes from the end of the session, that was then snatched away from him within the last few seconds before the chequered flag.
Shakey Byrne's pole starts domination has now ended and he will be starting in third after setting his fastest of time of 0.56.127s with Cal Crutchlow rounding off the front row with a 0'56.135s, slightly ahead of his team mate Leon Haslam in fifth.
Michael Rutter of North West 200 used his experience and ended the session in sixth after running further down the order for most of the session. This weekend also includes replacement riders James Haydon and Sean Emmett.
Haydon who is standing in for the injured Stuart Easton on the MSS Kawasaki, suffered a minor crash on Friday to continue with a successful weekend and bounce back to take 17th. Henderson R1 Cup competitor Emmett starts in 20th on the SMT Honda ahead of six regulars from the championship.
Simon Andrews of Jentin Racing/Lloyds British claimed 13th after being pulled in for a suspected technical problem and Billy McConnell of MSS Kawasaki finished tenth overall after suffering a crash early on in the session. Michael Ashley returns to the track after missing two rounds due to an knee injury he obtained from a crash at the rescheduled round of Brands Hatch.
Missing from the session was Brookspeed Moto-Rapido Cup Rider Leon Morris who suffered a broken collarbone from a highspeed crash in this morning's practice on Stebbe Straight. Michael Howarth who after practice this morning discovered he still could not ride with his injuried shoulder and is forced to miss another round.
Within the Daily Star Cup John Laverty of North West 200 continued his domination this weekend by setting a fastest time of 0'56.534s taking ninth on the grid ahead of Gary Mason in 16th with a 0'56.983s.
Regarding his weekend and the newcomer for Quay Honda Garage Laverty said: "It is all going really well, this is the first time I have done the chicane and it's going not too bad. It is good with Gary as this lifts the prestige of the championship, he's a good racer and has a lot of experience. No one now can say it is a hollow victory."
