Buildbase BMW's James Westmoreland took a gamble on the evening of first MCE British Superbike practice at Thruxton and put in an untested suspension link in an effort to get more feel for his S1000RR.
It paid off for the gritty Yorkshireman as he equalled his best-ever race result with a fourth in the first race, just ahead of team-mate Jon Kirkham and put himself in a Showdown-challenging position in the title stakes.
"The new link was a gamble on the Friday night and we didn't get a chance to see if it would work until Sunday as the weather was so poor on Saturday," said Westmoreland, speaking to bikesportnews.com this morning.
"It has given me the feel for the bike I needed. The team have had quite tall riders recently, so we had to try something for me and it worked. It isn't something that is particular for Thruxton and should set us up well for more good point scored going forward."
