Anthony Delany debuts into the Metzeler National Superstock 600 championship this weekend at Oulton Park for ex BSB rider Malcolm Ashley's MAR Racing team.
For the remainder of 2008 Ashley will be purely managing the MAR Adept team giving him time to recover fully from his crash at Brands Hatch earlier in the year. His ride for the remainder of the season has been given to Australian rider Shannon Etheridge who is also competing within the Henderson R1 Yamaha Cup.
In addition to the teams British Superbikes quest, 19 year old Anthony Delany will be their second rider running on a Kawasaki 600. Delany said: “This is fantastic, it's like a factory team compared to what I am used to. The setup is so different and also the knowledge the guys have is great, I go out, come back and say if something isn't quite right and next time I go out it is fixed.”
Delany is quite new to racing, but is not afraid of taking the leap into the big league. After riding a moped when he was sixteen he jumped onto a restricted Yamaha R6 at seventeen to ride on the road.
Following a track day it was suggested to him that he should think about racing and in 2007 he started club racing with BMCRC within the Rookie 600 Championship. Unfortunately his race bike was stolen quite early in the season giving him the opportunity to only enter four rounds all year.
Returning to race again this year Delany only participated in a further four rounds at club level before being given this Superstock opportunity by Ashley. Talking about his experience so far he said: “This is my very first time at this track and only my third time on the bike.”
“I am still getting to grips with the bike and also the track. I have already knocked four seconds off my time from my track day here on Wednesday, we made a few changes and now have put on some new tyres. I am aiming to get down into the 1'50s. It is a steap learning curve from club racing to being against the country's best”
Talking about the future with MAR he said: “It is for the rest of this season, but then it will depend on what sponsorship I bring in and also Malcolm with what he thinks of my riding come the end of the season. If I can get the personal sponsorship and have the opportunity again I would jump at the chance.”
