HM Plant Honda’s Steve Plater took the win and 2009 Fuchs-Silkolene Supersport Championship title at Outlon Park in the season finale ,while main challenger Billy McConnell of MAP Raceways Yamaha picked up no points due to an error and bad tyre choice.
It was Ben Wilson of Gearlink Kawasaki who led into the first corner followed by Plater, McConnell, James Westmoreland of J W Racing and Marty Nutt of Nutt Travel.com/T&G. All eyes were on McConnell and Plater who were fighting for the championship with Plater ahead only by seven points.
By lap one the leading four had pulled away, McConnell took the lead from third while Plater stayed in touch to move second pushing Wilson back to third. Wilson fell into the clutches of Westmoreland but it didn’t take him long to take the last podium spot in third putting Wilson in fourth.
Lap five saw Plater under great pressure from Westmoreland who made an inside move on him at Shell’s but ran wide so Plater could regain the position. By lap nine Plater looked to have reeled McConnell back in who had pulled away while dropping off Westmoreland slightly.
Plater finally made his move on McConnell for the lead in which they came into contact and as McConnell tried to fight back he nearly lost the rear causing him to fall back to third. A couple of corners later on lap 11 the three front runners hit a back marker mid corner in which McConnell also touched and after all this he had seriously dropped off from the leading two.
Westmoreland continued to put immense pressure on Plater with only three tenths between them but Plater kept is cool to eventually win by three and a half seconds. Westmoreland took second in the race and third in the overall standings.
In the meantime on lap 14 McConnell who had made a bad tyre choice ran straight on through the cones which put him down in 19th ending his championship battle and giving third to Wilson.
Nutt fell down the order slightly to finish eighth and again pick up a strong top ten finish. Other noticeable riders included Hudson Kennaugh of Gearlink Kawasaki who worked his way through the pack to finish fourth. 2009 Superstock Champion Jamie Hamilton also of Gearlink Kawasaki rounded off the top 20 in his successful debut weekend in the championship.
Out of the three MAP Raceways Yamaha it was only McConnell who suffered disappointment as Lee Johnston finished in fifth slightly ahead of team mate Allan Jon Venter who finished seventh giving them two out of three top ten finishes.
Ian Hutchinson crashed on lap three unable to continue his success from the Senior Superstock race which he won. Tom Grant had a difficult ride after having to carry out a ride through penalty for a jump start to finish 17th.
Sam Lowes of Team Co-Ordit was untouched in the cup championship finishing 10th taking the win while Peter Ward of TAG Triumph picked up second in 21st followed by David Jones of Clywd Heating Racing who picked up his first podium of the season in third finishing one position behind Ward.
