Oulton BSB: Iddon fastest in second free practice

Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon ended the second MCE British Superbike free practice session with the quickest rider accolade, at Oulton Park this afternoon.

The session was declared dry, which was stark contrast to the opening outing, which was held in much colder and damp conditions. The Stockport rider looked strong throughout the final half of FP2 and a 1’35.215 was good enough to place his S1000RR P1 on the sheets.

But all the times today were so close as the top seventeen riders were covered by less than one second this afternoon, in what has been the only dry track time today for the rider’s.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey was only 0.02s shy off bagging the number one spot on the screens, with Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper missing out by two tenths of a second. RAF BMW’s Alastair Seeley went fourth quickest, followed by Bennetts Suzuki’s Tommy Bridewell who rounded off the top five.

With less than 30 minutes remaining to the outing it was red flagged after the JG Speedfit backed ZX-10R of Peter Hickman experienced a technical issue at Druids, and sectors three and four had to be inspected for oil contamination after an engine blow-out.

But Hickman was not the only rider to experience bike problems, his team-mate Leon Haslam had an issue with his ZX-10R and when the red flags came out retreated to the pits, and never came back out. The Smalley rider only completed eight laps and by the end of the session fell down to 22nd overall.

Buildbase BMW’s Lee Jackson just missed out on a top five position, with Moto Rapido Ducati’s Danny Buchan, ePayMe Yamaha’s John Hopkins, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison and Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot completing the top ten.

Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin ended the session faster than his team-mate, Shane Byrne with the pair ending the day in eleventh and fifteenth respectively. Bennetts Suzuki’s Ryuichi Kiyonari was up to third before the red flag but lost his earlier momentum and had to settle for P12, followed by Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty.
