Oulton BSB: Irwin ponders pace after grabbing front-row spot

Glenn Irwin admits he was left wondering if he could’ve beaten team-mate Shane Byrne to pole today ahead of tomorrow’s opening Bennetts British Superbike race.

After finishing this afternoon’s FP3 fastest, the Be Wiser Ducati rider was left a little bit frustrated that he wasn’t able to capitalise when it mattered most.

Instead, he had to settle for the third fastest time behind his team-mate and Jake Dixon, but says the front row is definitely better than nothing.

“Obviously to be on the front row is really, really cool but as a racer you’re never happy,” he said.

“We all went far too slow on our out laps because no one wanted to give anyone else a tow, I felt like we had lost too much heat so we had a building lap and then a lap. I’m sure we could’ve done better but I’m sure these guys’ laps weren’t perfect either.

“There were a few mistakes from me and you find yourself thinking ‘what if, could it have been a 33?’ but you never know. That’s the racer in you.”

However, he is happy with his overall pace and believes tomorrow could be a good day for him and the team.

“I’d say race pace is certainly quite strong for us, especially with the things we found in FP3 so we’re quite content,” he added.

“It’s been a good day for the team, we’re one and three and both of us are on the front row, so roll on tomorrow’s races and let’s see what happens.”
