Christian Iddon - Championship position: 8th - Points: 153 - Podium credits: six
Iddon has, for all intents and purposes, been Tyco BMW’s sole participant in this year’s MCE British Superbike Championship after early team-mate and WorldSBK exile Davide Giugliano hardly turned up and then went away again in a puff of excuses.
Any and all development work on the S1000RR has been down to the Stockport rider and it is a credit that he is still in contention for a top-six place after missing a potential 100 points through a Knockhill practice crash that also ruled him out of Snetterton.
Iddon has taken three thirds and a second this year with his best points haul coming at a wet Brands Indy but the fast and flowing nature of two of the Showdown tracks - Assen and Brands GP - will play to the strengths of the BMW.
It is not going to be easy for Iddon to get into the Showdown by the end of Sunday night in Northamptonshire but he only has an eight-point deficit to Luke Mossey in sixth place, whereas James Ellison has a 42-point gap to bridge.
Iddon is banking on everyone being in the same boat this weekend with no testing having taken place for ant of the teams or riders looking for a top-six place, so he remains confident he can do the job. And even thought he might not admit it, Iddon may well be praying for a little precipitation to come his way.
“I was happy to narrow the margin in the points to the top six at Cadwell Park, but it still wasn’t as much as I would have liked and I did feel disappointed after the last round that we couldn’t capitalise more. Now Silverstone is going to have to be exceptional for us or at least very good because we desperately want to make the Showdown,” said Iddon.
“Everyone arrives at Silverstone on a level playing field. At Cadwell Park some people had tested already and we hadn’t, so we had to make up that time, whereas it will be wide open at Silverstone in that respect.
“It is going to be a real dog fight and it is a really interesting quartet in front of me; Jake has such a super raw talent, Josh who everyone will expect to be in the Showdown, Luke who comes back from injury, but it is a strong track for him and Jason is just ahead of that.
“I think we have to take it race by race; that’s the thing with racing you don’t know what will happen and so the best thing to do is nothing different to any other round of the season. I’m in control of my destiny and how I ride and together with the team we can control how we set the bike up for the three races. We just have to be collectively better than the guys ahead of us, because one thing we can’t control is what they all do during the weekend.”
