Kester Cunningham/Sam Bishop Racing’s Sam Bishop took his first win of the season at the fifth round of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup after an eventful weekend and first wet race, for all who took part.
Bishop lead into the first corner ahead of David Wood of KTM UK and Francis Williamson of SJ Racing/Bracken Motorcycles. Events for the category started on Friday, with numerous crashes occurring in first practice injuring one of the main championship challengers Ed Smith of Redline KTM who suffered a dislocated shoulder, prematurely ending his weekend.
Most victims fell at the Chicane, riders explained that this was due to the track only have two left hand corners. With the type of tyres the heat did not have time to build up quick enough on that side of the tyre which caused problem at the Russell’s Bend.
Bishop dominated the race building his lead up to a stunning 5.5 seconds by lap two which he constantly increased up to ten seconds at one point in the race. However Frances Williamson had moved himself up to second on lap two and started to bring the gap down at the tail end of the race.
In addition to Bishop’s tyre wear he also had a moment on the last lap at the Bomb Hole giving Williamson even more opportnity to take the lead. Bishop held him off by 0.4s as they crossed the finishing line.
Woods who was one of the crashers on Friday fell down the order to finish eighth overall. James Edmeades of Redline Motorcycles/VCG finished third after starting eighth on the grid.
Championship leader Kelvin Reilly managed to improve two places from his qualifying position finishing seventh, however this has decreased his championship lead down to 20 points. Jonathan Railton after qualifying sixth, was fifth on lap one and even worked his way up to third mdi race, but slipped slightly back down the order to finish take that fifth, but second in the Cup championship.
It was last lap mayhem as the heavens opened, forcing everybody to wonder if all would make it to the chequered flag, which they did. It was Bishop who took first place in both the race and Cup championship. Jon Paine of Jon Paine Racing who qualified down in 14th successfully battled through the grid to finish sixth in the race and take the final trophy of the Cup championship.
After the incidents of the weekend so far this has also damaged Smith’s championship standings as he has now lost two places in the standings with yet another race still to go tomorrow in which he most certainly looks set to fall further.
