The Panigale racer lapped a 1’47.795 and was one tenth under lap record pace at the 300 track. Joining Byrne on the front row is title challenger, JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam who, on his only lap put down a 1’48.358, but was 0.5s off the best time set by the Be Wiser backed Ducati.

New dad, Honda Racing’s Dan Linfoot completes the front row, and his one lap dash was good enough to reach the 1’48’s quite comfortably, and was a tenth shy off Haslam’s best time.

Row two is headed up by Linfoot’s Honda garage buddy, Jason O’Halloran, and the Aussie is joined by JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Peter Hickman and Moto Rapido Ducati’s Danny Buchan.

The first rider to go out to set time in the new qualifying format was Broc Parkes. The endurance rider is standing in for the injured John Hopkins on the ePayMe R1, and will start race one on the third row of the grid, alongside Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon.

The Stockport native is riding with a painful finger injury, and will have surgery on Monday to basically re-attach a tip of his finger on his hand. Buildbase BMW’s Richard Cooper will start from P9.

Qualifying two

Shane Byrne 1’48.156
Dan Linfoot 1’48.652
Jason O’Halloran 1’48.676

Byrne was the fastest rider in Q2 and made it through to Superpole, followed closely by the Honda Racing pairing of Dan Linfoot and Jason O’Halloran, who made up the provisional front row.

Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty was on a hot lap, but he crashed whilst outside the top ten at Agostini’s. He fell with five minutes remaining to the session and he was unable to get back on his bike to complete the outing and missed out on a Superpole session.

Joining the Wales based rider in the drop zone was JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison who lapped a 1’49.124, and missed out on making it into Superpole by a tiny 0.01 seconds.

In the end it was Parkes who clocked the ninth fastest time for a chance to challenge for pole position. Irwin, Jackson, McConnell, Dixon, Bridewell, Laverty, Kennedy and Backlund were all eliminated.

Shane Byrne 1’49.181
Leon Haslam 1’49.286
Peter Hickman 1’49.387

Byrne put down the marker in the first session, with Haslam setting a time that would put him on the provisional front row, with his team-mate Peter Hickman going P3 in Q1.

Luke Mossey crashed at Oggies whilst twelfth overall in the opening moments of the first qualifying session and in the end dropped down to last, and will have to start the first race tomorrow from the back of the grid.

ePayMe Yamaha’s Stuart Easton was unable to put down another quick lap when the chequered flag appeared and just missed the cut to go into Q2, and was pushed even further down the pack due to a fast lap by Smiths Racing’s Jakub Smrz. But the former World Superbike rider did not go fast enough and missed out on a qualifying two spot by one tenth of a second, but Backlund was able to hold on to progress.

Joining Smrz in the elimination zone was his team-mate Howie Mainwaring, as well as Jessopp, Rispoli, Seeley, Kiyonari, Zanotti, Tinmouth and Winfield.
