JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Luke Mossey rocketed to the top of the Bennetts British Superbike test at Snetterton in the final session of the day to pip young gun and series leader Bradkey Ray by 0.005s in brilliant sunshine.
Mossey, at the track closest to his home, put in a 1'48.008 to bag the bragging rights in a test that saw everyone some way off the 1'47.143 lap record despite a day of high temperatures - indeed Josh Brookes was puzzled to be on a 1'49s lap when his best at the track is a 1'46.8.
Leon Haslam, on the sister JS ZX-10R had been the rider to beat in the morning at the Norfolk circuit, but the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider bkew an enggine midway through the final session and his day ended prematurely, which dropped him to fourth.
Ray was on the move and with less than ten minutes go, the Donington Park double race winner had moved to within striking distance of Mossey, although at the chequered flag he couldn’t edge ahead.
Michael Laverty was third fastest on the Tyco BMW. The Irishman had been sitting at the top of the times earlier in the session but was still within 0.102s of the fastest time of Mossey with Gino Rea completing the top five for the OMG Racing Suzuki.
Tarran Mackenzie was the fastest of the McAMS Yamahas in sixth place, the team-mates split by Danny Buchan on the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki in seventh with Brookes holding eighth. Richard Cooper and Sylvain Barrier completed the top ten.
Reigning champion Shane Byrne crashed early in the day and was taken to hospital for checks.
