Franco Bourne claimed the spoils in the second Pirelli National Superstock Championship (SSTK) race at Silverstone on Sunday.
The Marvel HCL Motorsport rider leading from the second corner onwards to come home ahead of Dan Linfoot (Optimum Bikes Racing Honda) and Saturday’s victor Alex Olsen (Cumins by Team IWR Honda).
Pole man Joe Talbot (JR Performance Racing Honda) led off the line, but Bourne was soon ahead, sneaking through at Maggotss and he crossed the line at the end of the first lap in first, closely followed by Talbot, Linfoot, Olsen. Joe Francis (STAUFF Kawasaki) and Lewis Rollo (IN Competition Aprilia).
Bourne soon began to stretch the field with Linfoot moving up to second and latching onto the rear wheel of his fellow Honda rider and they’d opened up a near one second gap over Talbot after four laps, Olsen, Francis and Richard Kerr (AMD Motorsport Honda) now completing the top six.
Olsen took over third from Talbot on lap seven and set about closing the gap to the leading duo of Bourne and Linfoot and, further back, Kerr had moved up to sixth at the expense of Francis, Billy McConnell – one of the champion favourites – doing likewise next time around. Indeed, McConnell (C&L Fairburn Properties/Jackson Racing Honda) was up to fifth at the start of lap nine as he looked to close to the gap to Talbot.
At the front, Bourne continued to lead, his advantage almost half a second after nine laps with Olsen 1.5s further in arrears and, in turn, McConnell had almost two seconds to make up if he was take fourth from Talbot.
By half race distance, the race looked to be between Bourne and Linfoot as the gap to Olsen grew and the latter looked to be secure in third as he was now some two seconds clear of Talbot. He was now coming under pressure from McConnell though with the gap now under a second.
As the race entered its final third, the battle continued to rage between class rookie Bourne and the experienced Linfoot with a quarter of a second between them with six laps to go. Olsen was circulating in a lonely third with Talbot continuing to hold off the close attentions of McConnell, Kerr still running in sixth.
At the head of the field, Bourne had all the answers, but the red flag came out on the final lap due to a number of incidents and the result was taken at the end of the penultimate lap, the youngster getting the win – and the title lead in the process - from Linfoot with Olsen taking third for his second podium of the weekend.
McConnell finally got fourth with Talbot and Kerr completing the top six. Further back, Alastair Seeley, Francis, Ben Luxton and David Allingham rounded out the top ten with Matt Truelove, Joe Sheldon-Shaw, Brayden Elliott, Ashley Beech and Kade Verwey the remaining points scorers.
