British Mini Bikes Ellough Park: Weekend highlights

It was great to be finally back racing with the Rich Energy British Mini Bikes and it certainly did not disappoint.

Even after the covid situation and the knock-on affect of furloughed workers and some people even losing their jobs, the grids where packed and all the classes where well represented.

The three selections we have chosen have made the cut for very different reasons. The first being a young junior rider competing on a 190cc machine and also 140cc machine is Rhys Stephenson. The youngster rode a blinder all weekend and was away from the blocks quickly.

Rhys not only has an amazing style but has the lap times to back it up. It tells you all you need to know when he did the double over TT lap record holder and BSB front runner Peter Hickman in both of the RaceFasteners 190cc races.

He then narrowly missed out on victory in both Parker Racing 140cc races, being pipped to the post by Symoto rider Ryan Tyers and BSB Stock 1000 champion Richard Cooper. Rhys is definitely someone who has a bright future in the sport and has come on leaps and bounds this year.

The second mention goes to Veteran rider John Bolsover. After having a difficult race in race one taking a fifth behind some strong opposition, he really pulled the pin in the second race and took the victory and stuck it in the 53 sec bracket, which is quick time around the tricky circuit.

Knowing he had to go out in the second race and come away with the win to have a chance of taking away the overall he did just that, and  in fine style.

The final mention goes to a rider that didn’t actually even make it over the start line in his second race of the day. The by now Facebook-famous Mick Price had an unfortunate encounter with fellow Veteran rider William Horner before they even started their second race.

Both riders were fine after the coming together and William was the first to message in the evening to make sure Mick was OK. One of those moments you are so glad that the cameras are rolling.

A huge thanks to all involved this weekend and goes to show the British Mini Bike championship is stronger than ever with record grids in some classes and being supported by so many stars of today such as Peter Hickman, Kyle Ryde, Richard Cooper, Bjorn Estment, James Hillier, James Ellison, Lee Jackson…the list goes on.
A mention must also go the track and the track staff. Ellough Park based down in Suffolk is a real riders’ circuit and is immaculate, maintained by the team down there who are all very efficient in all of their roles.

You can certainly tell they have been running, marshalling and catering for events as such for a long time on four wheels, but this is the first actual round of motorcycle racing they have ever had at the mile-long flowing circuit.

The next round will take place at the lovely Lydd circuit on the south coast on the 8-9th of August.
