BMW give Miguel Oliveira an answer to his MotoGP Test Rider role

Gold & Goose

Miguel Oliveira will not be allowed to become a MotoGP Test Rider for Aprilia whilst racing for BMW in World Superbikes.

After making the decision to switch to the World Superbike Championship for 2026, Miguel Oliveira is already eyeing a return to MotoGP.

Oliveira has signed for the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, and will ride alongside former Grand Prix winner, Danilo Petrucci.

However, the Portuguese rider was keen to keep his name in the Grand Prix paddock as he had been looking at becoming a Test Rider for Aprilia, whilst racing for BMW.

At the Indonesian Grand Prix, it was clear that the Italian manufacturer was open to this idea, and needed the all-clear from BMW before they could sign Oliveira to test alongside Lorenzo Savadori.

Aprilia is keen on having a second MotoGP Test Rider after they suffered further injury woes during the 2025 season for Ai Ogura and Jorge Martin, leaving Lorenzo Savadori as a replacement rider for ten Grands Prix, and a wildcard rider for a single Grand Prix.

But the German manufacturer has now given Oliveira and Aprilia their final answer on the idea of their new rider testing for a rival manufacturer.

According to reports, BMW do not want Oliveira to test in MotoGP whilst he is signed for their World Superbike squad. The German manufacturer wants the 30-year-old to be fully focused on his efforts in the Superbike Championship, without any distractions from the Grand Prix paddock.

As it stands, Oliveira's ideal scenario of racing in World Superbikes and testing in MotoGP has not become a reality.
