For the first time in multiple years, Ducati looks set to stand still as they will most likely not use their 2025 engine.
During the 2025 MotoGP preseason, there have been rumblings in the paddock surrounding the Ducati GP25. There had been reports that Ducati could decide to discard its 2025 engine, chassis and aero package.
The Italian manufacturer has now made its decision regarding its engine for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Ducati has opted to continue with its 2024 engine and will discard its 2025 engine.
During MotoGP.com's After the Flag live on the final day of the Buriram Test, Davide Tardozzi was asked about Ducati's decision.
"The decision has been taken and the engine for the 2025 and 2026 seasons will be the '24," Tardozzi confirmed.
"As I said yesterday Gigi [Dall'Igna] does not want to take any risks. It will be a big effort for the guys at home to adapt engines for the riders for the first race. But if Gigi has made this decision then we will have these engines."
There has been no official decision made on the 2025 chassis or aero package and further discussions will take place this evening regarding the final verdict. But as Tardozzi stated there is a 'real possibility' that Ducati will not use their major 2025 upgrades.
"It is a real possibility," Tardozzi explained when he was asked about Ducati not using their 2025 engine, aero or chassis.
"I think the final decision on the fairing and chassis will be taken tonight, but it is a real possibility. We will postpone the other items we have used here until the test in Jerez."
He went on to confirm that the only new parts for the GP25 are related to the electronics and the suspension.
Tardozzi concluded: "There are some things that belong to the electronics and suspension, that is the '25 parts that are on the bike right now."
The latest news from Tardozzi comes after Marc Marquez told the media that he prefers the 2024 engine. After the opening day of the Buriram Test, the eight-time World Champion said:
"We cannot take the risk to homologate an engine that if we are not 100%... 100% sure is better than 2024 because if we homologate the engine we homologate it for two years."
"I feel super good on 2024 base. When I say 2024, it’s the 2024 bike. It’s the base of 2024, the engine, but they work a lot on very small items that we are introducing to that engine now."
