Usually, the who-goes-where-for-next-year merry-go-round doesn’t usually begin until at least August but it has begun very early for Texas Tornado Coin Edwards.
Not only has the Tech3 Yamaha rider already been linked with a switch to Kawasaki in MotoGP as a replacement for the struggling Anthony West, he is now on Ducati Corse’s shopping list as well.
The Italians’ star rider, Troy Bayliss, is retiring at the end of this year come what may, and Ducati’s superbike team boss Davide Tardozzi is in need of a big name to replace him. Step forward double world champ Edwards.
Tardozzi is reported to have said that he is very keen to speak to the American and that Bayliss thinks Edwards is the man to fill his boots, in the nicest possible way.
But would this suit Edwards? It is widely believed that if his MotoGP career comes to an end, he wants to return to the US and see out his days mixing it with the like of Mat Mladin in AMA. However, a year in WSB would be a lovely pay day but it would mean his third brand of tyres in as many years and might mean he doesn’t retire in the top flight, where he belongs.
And does he have the motivation and does he need the money?
