After three years in the MLav Racing Team, Scott Ogden has moved on from the British squad and will move to pastures new in 2025.
Scott Ogden has now been in the Moto3 World Championship for three years. The British rider has spent his entire Grand Prix career with the MLav Racing Team from 2022 to 2024.
At the end of the 2024 season, Ogden left the British team and announced he would move to CIP Green Power.
In an exclusive interview with BSN, Ogden opened up about his three years at the MLav Racing Team.
"Overall, it was a difficult period, but we did have some good moments," Ogden stated.
"For me, the main highlight was Silverstone 2023 when I got the fastest lap, so it should have been pole. But it got taken away, but I was still on the front row.
"That was probably the highlight for me just with it being a bit difficult leading up to that. And then having that moment at that time at the home GP for me and my team was probably the main highlight.
"Also, my first points in the world championship, in I think it was my second race or third race in Indonesia, that was also quite a big highlight because we arrived quite quickly."
'The first eight, or nine races were probably too good.'
When Ogden arrived in the Moto3 World Championship in 2022 he was a consistent points scorer. The British rider scored 16 points in his first nine Grand Prix weekends. In the final 11 race weekends in 2022, he scored a further five points.
Ogden went on to explain that his arrival into the World Championship may have been 'too good'. He believes that after his first nine races, the expectations for himself grew.
"Honestly, the first eight, or nine races were probably too good," Ogden explained. "Every time I finished the races, I was in the points.
"So, I think expectations grew a lot at that moment for me more than anyone. Then after that, it was difficult, most riders have a difficult period in their rookie season. For me, it came at the end of the season.
"It ended up being really difficult. I think because it was a new team, we didn't have a direction to go when it started to get difficult.
"It affected me quite a lot mentally and it was difficult. With everyone being new and not having much experience it was hard to get out of when it started to go bad.
"Then it was hard to pick everybody up and get good results again. That was probably the hardest thing. There was no real experience in that situation."
'For me, it was just having that trust in Michael. He trusted what I was saying...'
At the end of the 2024 season, Ogden got the chance to work closely with the MLav Racing team owner, Michael Laverty. The former MotoGP rider was working in the garage with Ogden.
It was during this time that Ogden's performances in Qualifying drastically improved. During the final four race weekends that the 21-year-old worked with Laverty, he managed to make it into Q2 at every race. Meaning he qualified within the top 18 throughout the four races.
"I saw his (Michael Laverty's) true experience and he helped me a lot in those 4 races," Ogden said when asked about working with Laverty.
"I think I came on more as a rider in those last 4 races than I did in the first two and a half years. So, it was it was good, but we didn't get to see Michael so much just because of his TNT role.
"I think because he was a rider in the past, the feedback I was giving him he could understand it a little bit more. He could process it from what I was feeling, and then he was able to put that into changing the bike instead of being so focused on the data, we didn't really look at the data at all.
"We just did it off my feedback, which really helped me a lot because he believed what I was saying, and then most of the time, he made the changes and it worked.
"I gained a lot of trust in what he was doing instead of second-guessing what bike I was going to ride in the next session. For me, it was just having that trust in Michael. He trusted what I was saying and, likewise, the other way around."
'CIP seems like a family team. They have a lot of belief in my ability.'
After three years with the MLav Racing Team, Ogden had to move on for the 2025 season.
The British rider has signed for the CIP Green Power squad and will ride a KTM next season.
The Austrian manufacturer had been a dominant force in the class in 2024, giving Ogden a good chance at his best year in the World Championship.
BSN asked Ogden about the decision to leave MLav Racing and how it happened:
"I lost the opportunity to stay where I was, and I wanted to be loyal," Ogden began. "I gave the team the option if they wanted to keep me, then I would be happy to be there.
"But that option didn't come around, so I kept speaking. I had a few offers and CIP, for me, seems like a family team. They have a lot of belief in my ability, and they would do anything for me as such. I've seen that over the last probably 2 or 3 weeks, whatever they can help me with, they will help me.
"That made it an easy choice because maybe their results haven't been the best. But I don't think that's on the team. I think that's on other things," Ogden concluded. "I truly believe that atmosphere can help me grow as a rider."
