Fabio Quartararo was left disappointed despite securing a Q2 spot during Practice

Gold & Goose

Despite securing a Q2 spot, Fabio Quartararo was not happy with the feelings he was getting from his Yamaha.

From the outside, the Friday afternoon Practice session at the Malaysian Grand Prix appeared to be positive for Fabio Quartararo, but he claims he was 'struggling a lot' during the session.

The Frenchman ended the opening day at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit in fifth place on the timesheets. Even though his one-lap pace was strong, he was struggling for grip across a long race run around the circuit.

"I am not feeling great at all," Quartararo admitted to MotoGP.com after the Friday afternoon Practice session.

"When the grip levels are low, we know that we struggle, but with a completely different bike, we don't understand why we could not find a solution in those conditions.

"I have always been quite fast at this track, but today I was slow. Unfortunately, I could not find a good feeling during these laps."

The 2021 MotoGP World Champion is praying that no more rain will fall overnight as he needs the circuit to be as grippy as possible across Saturday and Sunday for the Sprint Race and the Grand Prix.

"I think the grip is something that we really need to be fast," he explained.

"Or at least to be a bit more consistent, because today across one lap we know we are fast. But one lap over race distance, we all know, is useless."

Quartararo was one of three Yamaha riders to secure spots in Q2 for Saturday, as his teammate, Alex Rins, and Prima Pramac Racing rider, Jack Miller, also ended the day in the top ten.
