'I could have gone much faster had I not been behind rivals' - Fabio Quartararo

Gold & Goose

Fabio Quartararo found himself stuck behind his rivals after avoiding a 'close' incident with Fermin Aldeguer.

Despite starting from pole position, Fabio Quartararo's time at the TT Circuit Assen ended in disaster.

The French rider grabbed his fourth pole position of the season, but proceeded to crash out of the Sprint Race on Saturday while fighting at the front.

However, the 2021 MotoGP World Champions Sunday did not get much better as he encountered 'a close one' with Fermin Aldeguer.

The BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP rider crashed in front of Quartararo and forced him into taking evasive action and going onto the grass, dropping back down the order.

Quartararo found himself locked in a battle with Jack Miller, Johann Zarco and Alex Rins. During this battle, he struggled to pass his riders and had to settle for tenth place.

"My start was not so good, but not so bad either, it's just that the others made a great start," Quartararo said.

"The first laps were very difficult for us; we had zero grip. We were missing something. When Fermin crashed in front of me, I went into the grass and lost 8 or 9 seconds. It was a close one.

"You don't know what to do in such a situation. You want to keep turning, but the bike and Fermin are coming towards you. I opened the throttle to go into the grass. And then, when I was behind other riders, it was tricky to overtake.

"I think today, especially in the second part of the race, I could have gone much, much faster had I not been behind rivals."

Due to only scoring six points across the weekend at the Dutch TT, Quartararo has dropped a place in the MotoGP World Championship from 10th place to 11th.
