For the third time in 2024, Marc Marquez is a MotoGP race winner as he completed an incredible comeback ride.
Marc Marquez finished in second place in Saturday's Australian Grand Prix Sprint Race. However, the Spaniard's 27-lap Grand Prix went completely different to his Sprint Race.
From the moment the lights went out disaster struck Marquez. His Ducati GP23 spun up when he released the clutch and dropped back to 13th place. But with nothing to lose the eight-time Champion continued to push throughout the race.
In the early laps, Marquez carved his way through the field and made his way up to the podium fight. After passing Francesco Bagnaia, who was in second place, Marquez set his sights on Jorge Martin, who was leading the race.
Across the final five laps of the race, Marquez and Martin engaged in a tense battle around Phillip Island. A battle that Marquez would win, claiming his fourth MotoGP race win around the iconic Australian circuit.
After the race, Marquez revealed what happened with his tear-off: "Always something happens. I never remove the tear off at the start because for the start and everything it is dangerous. But this time when I was putting on the holeshot, something was super big on my visor, so I took it off. But unluckily it was under my wheel and I saw it and I tried to remove it but it was impossible and when I released the clutch I started to spin."
Marquez explained his comeback ride as he went from 13th to first throughout the race: "I don't know where I was at the first corner but I overtook many riders. At one point I thought it was impossible to catch Martin, but on lap five or six I started to get into a rhythm. I had calmed down because at the start I was stressed, but I am super happy for the victory. It is true that Martin pushed all the race and I was saving the tyre for a last attack."
