New MotoGP Kazakhstan GP dates have been announced, with the race being rescheduled to replace the Indian Grand Prix.
The Kazakhstan GP was originally scheduled for June, but was postponed due to floods. Recently, the future of the Indian Grand Prix became the subject of scepticism over delayed payments by the local race promoters to MotoGP rights holder Dorna.
One of the issues that arose was that a deadline for payments to be made to Dorna was 20 May 2024, but Indian election regulations (there is currently an ongoing general election in India) meant that public money could not be spent until 4 June. The compromise has been to move the second edition of the MotoGP Indian Grand Prix to March 2025, although in an interview with Telegraph India Fairstreet Sports CEO Pushkar Nath Srivastava said that the move was actually to do with the weather.
"It was mutually decided to shift the race to March next year," he said. "We are looking at first or second week of March. All the stakeholders, including Dorna, agreed that the September weather is not conducive for the race and it is tough on the riders and marshals as experienced last year."
"All payments were being made in between and whatever is left will be paid by next month. So that was not really a factor in shifting the race to next year. We also thought of doing it in November but that would have meant four back-to-back races which would have been tough on the teams and the riders."
It is also hoped that the better weather promised by a March date will see an increase on the 50,000 attendance of 2023.
As for the 2024 calendar, it will remain at the 21 races it was reduced to after the Argentinian GP's cancellation earlier this year, as the Kazakhstan Grand Prix will fill-in the date left vacant by India.
Round seven of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship, the Italian Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello.
