Luigi Taveri has died

Luigi Taveri, one of the great works riders of the 50s and 60s, has died. He was 88 years old.

A works rider with MV Agusta and Honda, the little Swiss won  three 125cc world championships competing against the likes of Tarquinio   Provini, Carlo Ubbilali, Hugh Anderson and even, from time to time, Mike Hailwood.

Pauline Hailwood said:”He was such a lovely man and a great friend of Mike’s. He will be remembered with great affection by everyone who knew him.”

Although he retired from world championship racing in 1966,he was a familiar figure at many classic events including the Isle of Man  Classic TT a couple of years ago. His international career started in 1954 riding a 500 Norton and 250 Moto Guzzi but he was quickly spotted by MV and won his first race for them, the 125cc Spanish Grand Prix in 1955.

His greatest successes came when he was signed up by Honda in 1961 winning two races that year but having to give best to 21 year old Hailwood in the 125 TT. The following year he took the first of his three world titles in that class where he became virtually unbeatable until quitting in 1966.
