More manufacturers will hurt satellite teams, says Yamaha MotoGP boss

Yamaha MotoGP boss Lin Jarvis believes that having 12 works bikes available in MotoGP instead of six will make it more difficult for satellite teams like Tech3 to capture and keep young talent.

But Jarvis also thinks that double the number of factory seats will be much better for the fans and for MotoGP in general, an opinion that was echoed by HRC chief Livio Suppo.

“Having more manufacturers present is a really good thing. The riders and the fans will be the big beneficiaries. The fans because there will be more brands to be followed, more teams to be followed. In general, I think it pumps up the price of riders. Before, if you wanted a factory ride, there were only six spots, now there are 12.

“I don’t think it will affect the price of the top riders so much but I think it will make it hard for the satellite teams to capture and keep young talent, I think that will be the critical thing. That is because factories have more money than satellite teams and 12 riders will be able to have a factory contract.”

Suppo added: “For sure it will be more difficult but will be good for the sport. This season nine riders winning and four manufactures is special, a big plus for MotoGP at the moment. If this means we have to switch riders more often, then this is a problem for us but good for the sport."

However, neither of them wanted to see the re-introduction of the rule that banned a rookie going straight into a factory team which was ditched just in time for Marc Marquez' move to Repsol Honda from Moto2.
