Moto3 France, Qualifying: Alonso Takes third Straight Pole Despite Holgado Pressure

Gold and Goose

The Moto3 French Grand Prix takes place this weekend, two weeks on from Collin Veijer taking victory in Spain. David Alonso has generally been the dominant force in the class of late, though, and he continued that throughout practice at Le Mans, setting lap record times in all three practice sessions.

Qualifying

David Alonso continued his perfect French weekend by taking pole position and setting yet another lap record.

Alonso's 1:40.114 was just 0.007 seconds faster than the lap record he set in P2 on Saturday morning, but he needed such strong speed because Dani Holgado lowered his own pace to the low-1:40s. Holgado's 1:40.125 was not enough for pole, but it's the closest anyone has been to the #80 all weekend.

Jose Antonio Rueda completed the front row, ahead of Adrian Fernandez, Collin Veijer, and Ivan Ortola who are all on row two.

Joel Kelso heads up row three, ahead of David Munoz and Angel Piqueras on that third row, while Ryusei Yamanaka completed the qualifying top 10 - ahead of Jacob Roulstone and Scott Ogden who round out row four.

P2

Just as in Austin and Jerez, David Alonso completed a sweep of the practice sessions at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans. Alonso set a lap record in FP on Friday morning, in P1 on Friday afternoon, and again in Saturday morning's half-hour P3 session, this time at a 1:40.121.

Collin Veijer was the closest rider to the #80, 0.4 seconds back in second place, ahead of Ryusei Yamanaka.

Alonso's time in FP was the first ever 1:40 lap time set by a Moto3 bike in Le Mans, but by the end of P2 there were eight riders under the 1:41 barrier. Behind Yamanaka, Angel Piqueras, Joel Esteban, Joel Kelso, Jose Antonio Rueda, and Riccardo Rossi were all in the 1:40s.

Xabi Zurutuza missed out on that milestone by 0.025 seconds, finishing P2 in ninth, ahead of Ivan Ortola who completed the top 10. The final four direct Q2 spots were taken by Adrian Fernandez, Taiyo Furusato Dani Holgao, and David Munoz.

P1

David Alonso went faster again in Moto3 FP2 in France. After breaking the lap record in FP1, he set another new record in FP2 at 1:40.470. This time, though, the top nine were able to get within a second of the Colombian.

The closest to him was Joel Esteban on the second Aspar CFMoto, ahead of Dani Holgado on the Tech3 GasGas. Jose Antonio Rueda, returning this weekend after missing both Texas and Spain through illness, was fourth, and Collin Veijer ensured that all four Pierer Mobility Group brands were represented in the top five, despite a crash.

Riccardo Rossi was sixth, ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki and Angel Piqueras, the lone Honda in the top 10 this afternoon. Joel Kelso was ninth, and Jacob Roulstone rounded out the top 10. FP1

David Alonso was fastest in Moto3 FP1 in France, breaking the lap record - set by Jaume Masia in 2020 - by over 0.6 seconds. Only Filippo Farioli and Scott Ogden were able to lap within a second of Alonso's best pace, reminiscent of the Colombian's practice performance two weeks ago in Moto3 Spanish Grand Prix practice.

Dani Holgado was fourth-fastest, ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki, Xabi Zurutuza, David Munoz, Ryusei Yamanaka, Joel Kelso, and Spain winner Collin Veijer who rounded out the top 10.
