Spain’s Maverick Vinales led a Yamaha clean sweep of the top three places on this morning’s MotoGP free practice one timesheet.
But Yamaha’s pace didn’t come without sacrifice as both Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo had big crashes. Neither was hurt in the incidents at turn 14 and turn eight respectively.
Vinales set his 1’49.866 on a soft/medium Michelin combination on a track that measured just 11°C. Morbidelli was less than a tenth behind with Quartararo on a 1’50.142.
Alex Marquez barged his way into fourth place with his last lap, set on new soft rubber front and rear which pushed Taka Nakagami into fifth and second fastest rider.
Suzuki’s Joan Mir was also a late charger, setting a 1’50.425 which pushed down Pol Espargaro into seventh.
Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, sporting a new and fierce haircut, was eighth and just ahead of Alex Rins in ninth.
Aleix Espargaro rounded out the top ten with a 1'50.801 with Brad Binder in 11th and 0.172s further back.
Jack Miller was the first Ducati on the sheets down in 12th place in a session that was not good for the Bologna factory.
The very low track temperature did not suit the GP20 at all and the works bikes were even further back in 15th and 17th place, sandwiching crasher Miguel Oliveira.
