MotoGP Argentina: Last-lap Lowes steal Moto2 pole

Britain’s Sam Lowes left it until his last lap to bag his fourth Moto2 pole position, waiting for a clear track after being held up on his two previous attempts to blast a 1’43.347 and demote reigning champion Johann Zarco to second place with Qatar poleman Jonas Folger in third.

Lowes, who is riding the Federal Oils-backed Gresini Kalex, was clearly frustrated with the traffic around him as the clock ticked down but the new Isle of Man resident bided his time and stuck in his lap just as it looked like Zarco had it wrapped up.

“Today the team made a great job once again: the bike is always improving and it’s nice to count on a team able to give you bike that helps you making progress. In qualifying there was some traffic, but I knew I was fast and it would be only a matter of time; in the final stages in fact I managed to do a good lap and I’m happy for that,” said Lowes.

“The track condition is not easy this weekend, but I feel good and relaxed on the bike. Like in Qatar we worked hard on the race pace: in the first Grand Prix I was able to maintain a good pace until the end and hopefully we can do the same tomorrow! The most important day is tomorrow of course, but it’s nice to be on pole! Grazie mille to the whole team.”

Folger, on the Dynavolt bike, is a little under three-tenths shy of Lowes’ time while Taka Nakagama heads row two. Franco Morbidelli and Thomas Luthi join. Britain’s Danny Kent put in a storming last lap to take eighth place while title challenger Alex Rins continues to struggle at the Argentine circuit and finished down in 11th, one behind Axel Pons.
