MotoGP Assen: Chassis stiffness not the answer for Hayden

Nicky Hayden believes he and his Ducati team must work smarter and better in order to turn around their fortunes and now concentrate on developing other areas of the Desmosedici GP13.

The 2006 MotoGP World Champion was disappointed he couldn't turn in faster laptimes on the lab bike at Barcelona which has been the focal point of development and thinks that now focus should shift away from the stiffness of the chassis to other areas, including engine position.

Ducati have a test at Misano when some of the other MotoGP are heading for Argentina and Hayden is pleased he will be testing at a place he knows and where he will race later in the year.

"I'm not going to Argentina as we have a test at Misano where there will be more on the new bike plus a few little bits. I'm not exactly sure of everything. Misano is one of our tracks, we are racing there later in the year so it will be nice to get some setup for the race," said Hayden, speaking at Assen.

"The lab bike wasn't a step, for me it wasn't even the same. The last thing I want to do is a step backwards. The pumping and grip problems was enough for me that I couldn't do the same laptimes, they were worse with the lab bike.

"They had been working on the lab bike since the Malaysia test and (Michele) Pirro has spent a lot of time and effort. Some of his comments were really positive. We had big expectations. We didn't think it was going to be two seconds but we hoped it would cure some of the problems we had.

"We should be able to expect that, it's not unrealistic. The engineers expected it too. It was disappointing but it is clear they are putting in the effort with the test team. We have to work smarter and better.

"We have been focusing a lot on stiffness with this new chassis but maybe stiffness isn't as big a problem as we thought. Now we need to look in some different areas - weight distribution, engine position, something. The stiffness didn't do it."
