MotoGP Assen: Rossi made 'right rear tyre choice' in qualifying

Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi’s late tyre change helped him clinch a front row start for the MotoGP race at Assen tomorrow.

The qualifying session started off very wet after an earlier down pour, but the rain soon stopped and the Dutch track started to dry slightly. But instead of putting in a intermediate tyre when he pitted, the multiple champion decided to go with a new wet tyre, and his decision worked.

Last year’s race winner’s strategy paid off, but he did not initially plan on making his way back to his garage for a tyre change, but he is ‘happy’ that he did. The Doctor did have another bike set up with intermediate tyres, but he never used it.

“The qualifying is always difficult and tricky especially in Assen as the condtiions of the track can change in five minutes and then the track can be very different,” said Rossi, speaking at the circuit.

“The rear moved a lot as some places were dry on the track so the rain tyres softened in these conditions. I risked it - I have two laps or maybe one lap and it was the right choice because I put in another wet tyre because it was too early for the intermediate’s to work and I am so happy. It is a shame for the pole but it is very important to start from the front row.

“I hope for the dry as in the dry I can be competitive and this morning was not so bad. We made a step in the settings and we put in the soft (tyre) at the end and we were very close to Dovi. We have to wait for the conditions and if it is wet we can be competitive too in the rain.”
