Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo has stolen the Catalan MotoGP pole position at his home circuit of Barcelona from team-mate Valentino Rossi, lapping just 0.013s seconds faster than the Italian reigning world champion.
Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner occupies the final front row place, half a second down on the Spaniard with leading Honda man Andrea Divizioso in fourth a further two-tenths behind. It isn't good news for Dani Pedrosa, however, as he crashed and landed on his injured hip during the final moment of qualifying.
Toni Elias moved himself into fifth place with five minutes of the session remaining with Monster Yamaha's Colin Edwards rounding out the second row despite a late-session crash which left him unhurt. Frenchman Randy De Puniet, on the Playboy Honda, is seventh, 1.2s in arrears with Pedrosa eighth.
Britain's James Toseland hauled himself back into the top ten with his final lap of 1'43.233 with Mika Kallio and Loris Capirossi in tenth and 11th place. Nicky Hayden's free practice form deserted him and he could only manage 13th behind Chris Vermeulen while MotoGP debutant Gabor Talmasci was last, some four seconds off the pace.
