MOTOGP DONINGTON: DOVIZIOSO TAKES DEBUT WIN; TOSELAND SIXTH

Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso took his debut MotoGP win in awkward conditions at Donington Park this afternoon while Britain's James Toseland was just pipped for fifth place by Valentino Rossi on the final lap.
Toseland's team-mate Colin Edwards, after getting an horrendous start, came back to claim second place, reeling in third-placed man Randy De Puniet and beating him out of the final turn and across the line.

In slippery conditions, Rossi crashed out of the lead at Foggy Esses with 11 laps to go which handed the young Spaniard the lead but got off the floor to make his way back to fifth, taking the place from Toseland in the final two corners.
The tricky conditions had made the track wet and further rain was forecast, so both the Marlboro Ducatis went out on full wets which proved fateful as enough rain failed to appear and both riders were lapped at half distance.
The Doctor led off the line with team-mate Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa in tow, but the Fiat Yamahas touched through the Craner Curves and Lorenzo went into the lead. Toni Elias also went underneath Rossi into the Old Hairpin and then into the lead as he also went past Lorenzo.

He wasn't there long, however, as Lorenzo went back past on the brakes into Foggy Esses. Toseland had hauled himself up to fifth by the end of the first lap as Edwards had faltered and was back down in 12th.

On lap two, Dovi tried a move on Rossi going through Schwantz but had the door shut on him. A lap later, Rossi was passed by Dovizioso at the Old Hairpin and the young Spaniard then went past Lorenzo one corner later.

Pedrosa shoved his way past Rossi at Coppice as Elias was passed by Dovizioso, Lorenzo and Pedrosa in a succession of corners. Rossi then went past Elias a lap later into the Old Hairpin as Stoner and Hayden found themselves at the back of the field.

With 26 laps to go, Lorenzo passed Dovizioso into Redgate for the lead and Pedrosa did the same thing a lap later as Randy De Puniet slid underneath Toseland. Rossi took Pedrosa for third going through Craner on the same lap and took Dovi into Foggy's to make second his own.

Lorenzo handed Rossi the lead when, on the run into Goddards, he touched a white line on the brakes and went down and his Yamaha slid under the airfence as Elias crashed going past Pedrosa as his rear wheel spun on white paint on the way up through Schwantz.

De Puniet took Pedrosa, who was lapping slowly, into the Esses with ten laps gone and they then set about each other for a handful of laps before the Frenchman managed to get away.

With 14 to go, the diminished adhesion flags came out indicating it was raining as Colin Edwards came out of nowhere and went past Toseland on the run into McLeans and was followed by Pramac Ductati's Mika Kallio a lap later.

As the rain continued to come down, Edwards got up to third as Capirossi, Melandri and Vermeulen all pitted to change to wet tyres and setup but it proved a mistake as it then proceeded to stop raining.

Toseland got past Pedrosa into the Old Hairpin with six laps to go, taking seventh as both De Puniet and Edwards were taking huge chunks of time out of Dovizioso. With three to go, the Texan pushed past De Puniet for second but he was re-taken into McLeans.

Edwards then shadowed the Frenchman right until the final pair of corners and managed to beat him across the line as Rossi stalked Toseland, and went past into Foggy's, but Toseland sat the bike up and got back underneath The Doctor. However, Rossi was not to be outdone and got back past the Briton before they crossed the line.
