Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi has taken the final MotoGP pole position at Donington Park for the foreseeable future with his last run of laps and Dani Pedrosa's last lap wasn't enough to depose The Doctor.
Rossi, who hasn't won here since 2005, put in a 1'28.116 which was only one one-hundredth of a second in front of the Spaniard with Jorge Lorenzo two tenths further back. Casey Stoner crashed for the second time today, adding a fall at McLeans this afternoon to a minor tumble at the Melbourne Loop this morning. He went back to the pits for his second bike but could only go quick enough for fourth place.
The Australian started his pole campaign early, putting in a 1'28.909 inside the first ten minutes while Randy De Puniet and Dani Pedrosa, both on Hondas, duked it out for second and third.
It took Lorenzo 20 minutes to finally better Stoner's time, lapping at 1'28.803 and Stoner then crashed five minutes later, losing the front of his number one Desmosedici.
With 25 minutes left, James Toseland parked his Monster Yamaha in fifth as De Puniet crashed, and five minutes later Toseland's team-mate Colin Edwards lapped fast enough to go fourth.
The Doctor was still hanging around in the top five, but with 19 minutes to go, he went quicker than Edwards who was then deposed by Pedrosa. The Spaniard went to the top of the timesheets with 14 minutes to go, lapping in 1'28.496 but Lorenzo went quickest again with a 1'28.402.
With five minutes in the session to go, Rossi was back out and set a 1'28.116 which wasn't to be bettered but Pedrosa ran him close with a 1'28.211 while Stoner was three-tenths off the pace. Toseland ended up in ninth place.
