Crocked works Yamaha man Jorge Lorenzo has topped the first MotoGP free practice session at the Sachsenring this morning, edging out Dani Pedrosa while Britain's Cal Crutchlow took a tumble just before the period came to an end.
The Monster Yamaha man had been at the sharp-end of the timesheet for much of the 45 minutes but went down into the first corner and rolled through the gravel. The Isle of Man resident looked to be winded before gathering himself and walking to the barrier.
Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo showed no signs of his recently-repaired collarbone giving him any trouble whatsoever, putting in 20 laps at the German circuit with a best of 1'22.047 which was just under two-tenths faster than the Repsol Honda of Dani Pedrosa.
Valentino Rossi was third quickest and only two one-hundredths slower than the little Spaniard while Marc Marquez was fourth and a fraction more than a tenth behind the nine-times world champion on a 1'22.397.
Hometown hero Stefan Bradl stayed ahead of Crutchlow by 0.009s to finish in fifth place while Aleix Espargaro put his CRT Aspar Aprilia in seventh and only six-tenths off the pace of Lorenzo on this short and twisty track.
Nicky Hayden recovered from a massive moment which saw him riding across the grass to set the eighth best time, just ahead of Alvaro Bautista. It wasn't a good session for Andrea Dovizioso, who crashed his lab Desmosedici at turn 11 but he bounced to set the 11th fastest time.
Andrea Iannone also wrecked his lab Ducati, completely tearing off the rear in a big shunt before coming out on the spare GP13 to finish in 12th, just behind Randy De Puniet. Michael Laverty, who has never ridden here before, was 22nd and three seconds off the pace.
