MotoGP Germany: Marquez fastest as Lorenzo misses qualifying two

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has taken charge of the MotoGP timesheets this morning at the Sachsenring, opening a small gap over Ducati’s Andrea Iannone but it was disaster for reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo who will have to go through qualifying one after finishing free practice in 15th.

The Movistar Yamaha man found some pace as track temperatures are warmer today than yesterday, managing to hop into sixth place as the session counted down but faster times by the pack saw him shuffled down to 15th and out of an automatic qualifying two place for the first time.

The Spaniard is losing huge chunks of time in the third sector which includes turn 11 where Lorenzo crashed early on yesterday and he is losing almost four tenths to Pol Espargaro - who is bravest - in that area alone.

By contrast, team-mate Valentino Rossi, who was in as much trouble as Lorenzo yesterday, finished in fourth place and is just three-tenths slower than Marquez on the combined timesheets.

Marquez was able to set a 1’21.552 which is right on his own lap record and set two more times in the 1’21s bracket with a whole host in the 1’22s. Iannone also has three in the 1’21 bracket as does Maverick Vinales in third place with his best of 1’21.820 a quarter of a second slower than the works Honda.

Rossi has just one lap in the 1’21s and does Espargaro while Dani Pedrosa, who struggled yesterday, ended in sixth place after occupying second with only a few minutes left. Aleix Espargaro finished in seventh with Hector Barbera in eighth place. Andrea Dovizioso hauled himself into ninth with Yonny Hernandez the final qualifying two man in tenth.

It was bad news for the British contingent as Cal Crutchlow just missed out on a Q2 place in 11th place. The LCR Honda man crashed unhurt at turn one early doors (see below) but bounced back quickly. His best lap of 1’22.190 had been enough for fourth place before the final time attack laps and he slipped down the order.

Bradley Smith ended in 14th, just one ahead of the slowest Yamaha in the shape of Lorenzo, while Scott Redding’s early promise faded and he finished in 17th but only 1.2s off the pace. Eugene Laverty ended in 21st.
