Bancaja Aprilia's Bradley Smith has secured a provisional front-row spot on the 125cc grid for Sunday's MotoGP round at Indianapolis after the first free practice session was interrupted by damp conditions.
Smith had set provisional pole with a 1'50.878 but was towing Simone Corsi as he crossed the line with eight minutes to go and the Italian stole the top spot by just over a tenth of a second.
It was last year's winner Nicolas Terol, however, who set fastest time just one lap later with a 1'50.603 before the diminished adhesion (rain) flags came out and the riders came into the pits.
Sandro Cortese rounds out the provisional front row, three-tenths off the pace while Marc Marquez is fifth, Efren Vasquez is sixth, early pace-setter Stefan Bradl seventh and Smith's team-mate Sergio Gadea rounds out the second row. Championship leader Julian Simon, on the third of the Bancaja Aprilias, is ninth, six-tenths in arrears.
Blusens Aprilia rider Scott Redding finished the hour-long session in 12th place on a 1'51.788 while Danny Webb, on the De Graaf Aprilia, was 18th quickest with a 1'52.491
