Bancaja Aprilia's Bradley Smith took the second 125cc podium spot at the Indianapolis MotoGP round this afternoon, setting a new lap record on the last lap of a five-man dice for the win.
The Oxfordshire teenager slotted into third place through the first turn from his fifth slot on the grid and then commenced a race-long scrap for the win with last year's victor Nicolas Terol, Simone Corsi, Pol Espargaro and champsionship leader Julian Simon.
Terol had the lead from Espargaro from Smith, but after just one lap Smith was past and into second place after getting a tow down the back straight and sliding past on the brakes.
He was a second in arrears as they came across the stripe to start the third lap but managed to claw his way back up to Terol, towing Corsi and Espargaro with him, as Simon got onto the back of the pack.
Because of Terol's superior speed down the long start/finish straight, Smith was only able to get past him once into turn one with 13 laps to go, but had to run wide which let Corsi get to within a wheel.
Espargaro found a way past Smith around the back section on the same lap, and a lap later Corsi was also past the British rider. With 10 laps to go, Smith used his favourite overtaking place to get back past Corsi as Espargaro and Terol bashed fairings, enabling Smith to go past Espargaro into turn one on lap 13.
Smith then shattered the lap record with six laps left as he waited for an opportunity to get back into second as Espargaro was stalking the rear wheel of Terol. With two laps to go, Terol was passed and a lap later, Smith rode round the outside of the Spaniard to take second.
De Graaf Aprilia's Danny Webb finished in 11th place after being as high as ninth while Blusens Aprilia's Scott Redding retired from 11th place with a blown engine.
