MotoGP Jerez: Rossi looking for smoother power delivery

Ducati's Valentino Rossi wants his team to smooth out the power delivery on his Desmosedici MotoGP bike in order for him to be able to get out of corners more effectively.

The Doctor reckons his new 1000cc motor is so powerful it is having to be controlled by electronics so much that his exit speed is being compromised. Stopping short of demanding a new, less powerful engine, Rossi reckons that making it less violent could be the key.

"This is one of the most important targets for to improve our performance. I always have some difficulty in acceleration, to open the throttle. It's more important to have the right link from the throttle to what is happening in the engine than to manage the power. This is because our engine is very powerful and we have to use a lot of electronics to use the power," said The Doctor, speaking to bikesportnews.com at Jerez.

"I think to improve the acceleration of this bike we need to work more on the engine, not just the electronics. It doesn't need a new engine, just one with two or three modifications for better delivery. I don't know if it will be ready for the Portugal test but fortunately, we have some other tests later but we hope as soon as possible.

"In the last test before the start of the season, my performance with the Desmosedici was not too bad here. I leave with some good laptimes and I leave in sixth place, so that was just one month ago and from tomorrow we can stay with that setting as we have data so we don't start from zero, so this is positive. The target is to improve the laptime and position from Qatar but we have to wait for the forecast because it is quite bad. In the wet we are quite competitive with the Ducati, so we will see the potential of this bike under the rain."

Bridgestone have turned up with a new, softer specification front tyre for use this weekend, but each rider will only get two units, which has annoyed Casey Stoner. Rossi, however, doesn't seem to think this will make much difference to his front-end problems.

"I felt a small improvement in the new tyre in the test so for the first time this weekend, we will have the tyre to try and will be interesting to understand the potential of this tyre over a race weekend but I don't think it will be a big, big change."
