Aki Ajo's Moto3 wunderkind Pedro Acosta continued to do no wrong at the Le Mans MotoGP round where he managed to extend his championship lead despite crashing at the notorious turn three
Acosta got off the line well from the seventh row of the grid, moving up from 21st place to tenth on lap one. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie latched onto the leading group and continued to overtake rivals very cautiously, due to the difficult conditions, but fell going into when in seventh.
The Spaniard remounted in 23rd position and began another spectacular comeback, overtaking 15 riders to finish the race eighth.
Due to the tricky conditions and high attrition rate, Acosta scored more points than his championship rivals with team-mate Jaume Masia crashing out, Nico Antonelli doing the same, while Andrea Migno and Romano Fenati ended in tenth and 11th.
“In the warm-up we had the same feeling we had riding in the wet yesterday. We knew that it was going to be a tough race, but when we had done the most difficult part, which was to start well, we made a mistake," said Acosta, who now has a 54 point led over yesterday's winner Sergio Garcia.
"However, we were able to handle the situation and earned some important points. I want to thank the team because they worked very hard with the various crashes we suffered this weekend."
Team boss Aki Ajo added: “We have mixed feelings about the Moto3 race. It was a challenging weekend at Le Mans, so we have to be happy with Pedro's result. He made a small mistake that, with the state the track was in, is very easy to make. However, he was able to continue and managed the contest well and took as many points as possible. We must remember that it was also his first time at this circuit."
