MotoGP Le Mans: New softer rear tyre gives Lorenzo 'more grip'

Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo continues to be pleased with the improvements Michelin have made this weekend, with the introduction of a new ‘softer’ rear tyre compound construction, which all the riders used today, and the reigning champ has felt the benefit during the race at Le Mans.

Lorenzo not only bagged pole position yesterday with a new out-right lap record, but he also soared to victory this afternoon with a huge ten second advantage over second place rider, Valentino Rossi.

He is now the new championship leader, but still believes that work needs to be done on the tyre to counter some slight issues. But Lorenzo felt he had more grip out on track, compared to the last round at Jerez where he experienced issues with the rear tyre and suffered wheel spin in a straight line on his M1.

“The tyres they worked great and I think Michelin make a nice job and are fast and work hard to improve the problem that we had in Jerez. So the tyre especially in the centre gave us a little bit more grip,” said Lorenzo, at the track.

“With Michelin even if they are our only brand in the championship they are willing to improve the tyres and give us the best tyres. Obviously we still need to work in the centre of the tyres. In the back straight we slip a little bit but nothing compared to the feeling in Jerez.

“I didn’t want to relax to much before the race as you never know what can happen with different conditions. In the race, especially after the Moto2 race sometimes the Dunlop tyres can create less grip on the tarmac and can effect the performance of the riders.

“I couldn’t stop so well in the braking so that’s why Iannone could recover some metres but the key was that I was feeling better and better with a less full tank. So the big gap when Dovizioso and Marquez crashed and Rossi in second place - I could breathe a little bit more, but I decided to keep full throttle as I didn’t want to lose the concentration of the race.”
