MotoGP Misano: Crash to debut podium for Redding

Britain’s Scott Redding climbed out of the gravel trap and changed tyres twice during today’s Misano MotoGP but still managed to take his first premier class podium in Italy.

With the field starting the race on slick tyres, Redding crashed at turn four on lap six when rain started to fall heavily while he was on a brilliant charge up from 13th to the battle raging for fourth.

Redding pitted to switch to his wet weather Honda RC213V machine and was seemingly well out of contention. As the rain quickly stopped, the 2.626 miles surface dried rapidly and Redding timed his switch back to slicks perfectly and he was fourth on track with just seven laps to go.

Redding then launched a terrific charge towards his first premier class podium, which ended in success when he passed Loris Baz for third on lap 25.

“At the beginning of the race when it rained, I thought I had nothing to lose, so I pushed as hard as I could to go with them. I pushed too hard, locked the front and couldn’t stop the bike before I went into the gravel. I tried to get on the gas and turn the bike but the traction control was cutting the power so I crashed and thought the race was done,” said Redding, speaking at Misano.

“I got back to the pits as fast as I could and I saw that Yonny and Aleix had not passed so we were in a good position if it rains. I had a really bad feeling with the rain tyre, I couldn’t get the tyre up to temperature and when it did, the track was too dry, so I thought that from 28th, I could take the slick again, push and push and the position came down.

“I saw P4 and I thought that was a mistake for a crash and two changes but then I saw seven seconds to Baz and tried to catch him as fast as possible in case some more rain was coming. I didn’t expect it today. The season has been tough for us but we try every day to make it happen. We work hard all the time and we just had to take that bit more of a gamble today.”
