Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi scorched to a last-lap MotoGP pole position this afternoon at Misano, lapping two-tenths of a second faster than Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa who had abandoned a fast lap with only a handful or corners to go.
Rossi lapped in 1'34.338 with his final circuit which was enough to secure top spot and bump team-mate Jorge Lorenzo back to the outside of the front row, half a second in arrears.
Rossi was out right at the start of the hour-long session and set the early pace but Lorenzo had followed him and the pair swapped times for the lead right from the off, with no-one else but Pedrosa getting a look in.
The Doctor started a serious run of fast laps with 25 minutes remaining with a 1'35.137 which better Lorenzo 1'35.200 which the Spaniatd set ten minutes beforehand.
Two minutes later, Rossi upped the game again going under the 1'35 barrier with a 1'34.974 as Monster Yamaha's Colin Edwards pulled himself up into fourth place with a 1'35.464.
With 15 minutes left, Lorenzo went out on a soft tyre as Pedrosa started a run of laps which saw him briefly demote Lorenzo to third with a 1'35.132 but Lorenzo was back instantly, going three one-hundredths faster.
Lorenzo took the lead in the dying seconds with a 1'34.808 which lasted for a fleeting moment as Pedrosa went faster with a 1'34.560 before Rossi showed them all which way to go with his 1'34.338. Pedrosa did have a fast lap left and was quickest through the first split but abandoned it half way round.
