Almost before Stefan Bradl had got to the Sepang medical centre after fracturing his ankle in today's final MotoGP free practice session, speculation began as to whether Casey Stoner would deputise for the German at Phillip Island next weekend began.
The former world champion is due to ride parade laps with Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner at the circuit as well as being inducted into the Hall of Fame but has said on more than one occasion, he wouldn't be back to race in MotoGP.
Marc Marquez said he would welcome Stoner's return: "For me it would be interesting to ride with Casey but this is a decision from Honda. It would be a dream that comes true."
Valentino Rossi joked: "I hope to be in great a shape next weekend! It would be good to fight with him in Phillip Island as he is very fast but looks like we are not so far.."
Cal Crutchlow added: "I told Marc to say yes but I say no as it means I might be one place back. I am sure it would be good fun if he could come and ride. Hopefully he doesn't go too fast."
