MotoGP Sepang test II: Marquez ends fastest; Crutchlow third

Despite losing a day of development time to brake problems on Monday, Marc Marquez has predictably emerged atop the Sepang MotoGP timesheets with a lap only three-tenths slower than his outright best which was set in much more favourable conditions earlier in the month.

The Repsol Honda man, who has had two different chassis to work on this week, put in a 1’59.115 on his 13th lap and kept a gap of three-tenths to Jorge Lorenzo for the rest of the day. The Movistar Yamaha man set his own personal best at the Malaysia circuit of 1’59.437, also set in the morning when temperatures are cooler.

"I'm happy because this morning we set a good lap, which is something important, but mostly I am pleased that we have completed all the work we had left pending from the first day. We're finished today with our homework done and I even had time to do a race simulation this afternoon, with a track temperature of 49°C,” said Marquez.

“We have accomplished all the objectives we had set for this test, and now at the Qatar test our work will be more focused on the Grand Prix and fine tuning the setup of the bike. I do not think there are many more new things to try."

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow also smashed his personal best on the way to third place on the sheets. The CMW LCR Honda man went round in 1’59.658 to dip under the 2’00 mark for the first time despite suffering the same yet-to-be-revealed braking issues that Marquez did on day one.

Ducati’s Andrea Iannone continued with the development of the GP15 and put in a 1’59.722 for fourth place. The time was four-tenths slower than he did on the GP14.3 at the first set of tests but on a new bike, it looks promising for the young Italian.

Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi couldn’t find the pace to match his Movistar Yamaha team-mate and ended the day in fifth on a 1’59.883, three-tenths down on his personal Sepang best and almost half a second slower than Lorenzo.

Bradley Smith has upped his pace again for sixth place and the Monster Yamaha broke the 2’00 barrier for the first time with his 1’59.883 to be quicker than Dani Pedrosa by 0.029s, who is strangely off the pace.

Hector Barbera was easily the fastest Open class bike, setting a 2’00.244 for eighth place and almost half a second faster than Stefan Brad’s Forward Yamaha, which was down in 15th place.

Aleix Espargaro continued with the Suzuki’s development, ending the day in ninth place while Andrea Dovizioso will be disappointed with his final day’s time which was only good enough for tenth place and 1.3s off the pace. The Italian’s time from yesterday was quicker by two-tenths.

It has not been an easy test for Scott Redding who is still learning the RC213V. The Marc VDS man will not be pleased to finish in 16th place overall, a second slower than Crutchlow on the same bike and only a tenth faster than Nicky Hayden on the Open Honda.

Eugene Laverty ended the test in 23rd overall, one place behind Jack Miller and two-tenths slower. Marco Melandri, who Tweeted he couldn’t ride yesterday, improved his time by a second but is still more than four second off the pace.
