Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller and team-mate Danilo Petrucci kept reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez honest in the opening free practice session at a soaking wet Valencia this morning.
The first piece of track action was delayed due to standing water which very nearly caught out Maverick Vinales before race direction deemed it too dangerous to continue and brought out the red flags after just eight minutes.
When Loris Capirossi has finished cocking about in the M3CS safety car, Marquez opened his account at the top of the timesheet with a 1’43.070 with Miller and Petrucci in close attendance.
It was that trio that dominated the top of the sheets with some brief incursions from Vinales, Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa.
Marquez ended the morning on a 1’39.767 just after Miller crashed at turn ten while on a potential fastest lap and the Australian had to settle for second with a 1’39.873. Petrucci closed his session with a 1’39.907.
A late charge from Andrea Dovizioso saw him oust Pedrosa for fourth place as the tiny Spaniard ended seven-tenths down on team-mate Marquez. Andrea Iannone also put in a late run for sixth while Vinales slipped back to seventh late on.
Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, who has a good history at Valencia, finished in eighth with Pol Espargaro and Alex Rins completing the top ten. Rossi slipped behind Aleix Espargaro for 12th place with Johann Zarco, Karel Abraham and Xavier Simeon rounding out the top 15.
