MotoGP Valencia test: Smith finds a second with factory parts

Monster Yamaha's Bradley Smith used the factory fuel tank and seat unit in MotoGP testing yesterday and immediately went a second a lap faster at Valencia but said he is not yet targeting Valentino Rossi as a 2014 rival.

The Oxfordshire youngster put in a 1'31.397 on his 77th lap yesterday and was consistently in the low 1'32s bracket while in Sunday's race, his best was 1'32.597 which then dropped into the 1'33s.

"I went from a run on my race bike straight to the new package. I went faster on the first run, and then slowly went faster and faster. The biggest difference we saw was on the hard tyre. We were able to use it and during the race weekend on my bike I wasn't able to generate the temperature and load on the bike," said Smith, speaking at Valencia.

"We were consistently high 31s whereas in the race I was high 32s-low 33s so for me there was quite a big difference with the new package. The bike in general works more, we don't have to rely on a new tyre to give us grip. The bike naturally gives me more and in turn that leads to lap times.

"It's easier to ride. I was able to do long runs without thinking about it which I think bodes well for next year, being less tired towards the end of a race. But I am sure that taking this bike to its limit will be just as hard. At this pace that I am doing, it is taking less out of me.

"I have still got to make this bike my own. We didn't change much from the base setting we were given but there is definitely less effect from the full fuel going into a corner but also on rear grip. It's win/win as the bike is more balanced and able to carry more corner speed like a Yamaha should. There is no negative. It works on full fuel or low fuel.

"My objective next year is still to beat the satellite riders, Bautista and Bradl. Valentino is stronger in the race than I am, you know when he qualifies strongly he will be in the race. I still have to work on that area to keep up with him but that is not my focus for next year."
