Jorge Martin reflects on finishing 15th in the San Marino Grand Prix after deciding to pit for wet tyres.
It seemed like Jorge Martin was nailed on to win the San Marino Grand Prix after he won the Sprint Race on Saturday. However, when rain began to fall the Spaniard made a rash decision that ended up being his downfall.
Whilst the race leader, Francesco Bagnaia, stayed out Martin decided to box for a bike with a wet setup. This decision ended up being a massive error for Martin as the rain stopped falling over the Misano Circuit. Martin had to pit for a second time to switch back to his dry setup as a result.
After the race a deflated Martin insisted that if he was in that scenario again he would not roll the dice.
"Sometimes rolling the dice is not the best idea when you are fighting for a Championship," Martin said. So next time I won't do it. I will stick to Pecco's decision and do the same."
Martin ended up being a lap down after his two bike swaps, but he was in 15th place. The Spaniard was relieved he was able to get a point but understandably devastated with where he finished.
"I did not know if I could overtake or not, so I was just behind them, waiting and waiting. At least I was able to get one point. Everything we achieve is good, for sure we could have more points today. But the important thing is to always try our best."
Finally, Martin was asked about the Championship as his lead to Bagnaia has shrunk from 26 points to seven.
"I mean other riders are strong, so we will see at the end of the season, but I will focus on myself."
