Pirelli wants to ensure reliability with its new MotoGP tyres

Gold & Goose

Developing a tyre for MotoGP will be a big challenge for Pirelli, but they want to establish reliability before performance.

With Pirelli being named as the sole tyre supplier for the 2027 MotoGP World Championship, the pressure is now on for the Italian brand to develop a tyre suitable for the prototype machines.

In a recent interview with GPOne, Pirelli's Sporting Director, Giorgio Barbier squashed any idea that the same tyres that are used in World Superbikes could be used in MotoGP.

"No, that certainly does not have to be the approach," Barbier stated.

"We have very special motorcycles and we have to approach the matter with humility, understand this type of racing motorcycle and find out how we can develop alongside the manufacturers. To do this, we have to organize ourselves accordingly.

"In MotoGP, the cornering speeds and the dynamics would certainly be a challenge for the current Superbike tires.

"At this point in time, there is no finished tire design. I don't know what the final design will look like, but we have to calmly ensure that every motorcycle manufacturer is able to develop reliably.

"Only then will we focus on performance, because for that we need time and tests to develop these tires."

Time is now also a factory in Pirelli's decision for their MotoGP tyre's. The Italian brand has less than two years to develop and produce their new tyres, but further confirmation from Dorna regarding testing is needed.

"We are still discussing important details that we cannot yet announce," Barbier said.

"I expect further discussions with the FIM and the manufacturers' association MSMA, because we are still two years away from the premiere.

"The motorcycles still have to be prepared, there are designs, but we have not seen the motorcycles yet. So we have to decide when we will go on the track, under what conditions, with which riders and, above all, according to the rules that Dorna will set."
